Gingernuts debuted to Australian racing for a resounding win in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) a fortnight ago and remains an outright $3.30 favourite in 2017 Australian Derby betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au, ahead of Inference ($4.50) and Jon Snow ($7.50).

Will Gingernuts justify favouritism and win the 2017 Australian Derby, or will one of his talented rivals make up the distance and post an upset?

Gingernuts ($3.30)

The dominance in which Gingernuts defeated his rivals in the Rosehill Guineas suggests that he should just win the Australian Derby this weekend. Taking a couple of runs to find form upon resuming in his native New Zealand, the Iffraaj gelding returned to winning form in a Te Teko minor over 1600m on January 30th, before posting consecutive and comfortable wins in the Group 2 Avondale Guineas (2100m) and Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) through February and early March. Gingernuts has been drawn in a wide alley, but has plenty of time to find a good position in transit in the Australian Derby, and will be partnered by regular hoop Opie Bosson.

Prized Icon ($11)

Prized Icon is a proven performer at the distance and class of the race and is arguably over the Australian Derby odds at $11 to win, or $3.20 to finish in the first three. Posting his first win at the highest level in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at the conclusion of the 2016 autumn campaign, the More Than Ready colt produced a number of standout performances in spring and ended his year a dominant winner of the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m). Last seen working home well for second in the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) last weekend, Prized Icon is drawn well and should improve noticeably upon stepping up in distance.

Anaheim ($8)

Anaheim has built well into his appearance in the 2017 Australian Derby and is not without a chance of an upset in the feature race. Capping a smart 2016 campaign with a maiden black type win in the Listed TV Stakes (1800m) on Crown Oaks Day, Anaheim resumed this time to finish third in the Sandown minor over 1400m, before savaging the line for fifth in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) on March 4th. Having worked home well for fourth in the Rosehill Guineas las time out, the Fastnet Rock colt will enjoy improving conditions at Randwick on Saturday.
