Gingernuts debuted in Australia for a dominant win in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) a fortnight ago and has been confirmed in the 2017 Australian Derby field.

A standout for Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards this time in, Gingernuts required a couple of runs to find form upon resuming on New Year’s Eve, but stormed home to beat a talented field in the Nicholson Autos BM65 (1600m).

Making a successful transition to black type company when a dominant winner of the Group 2 Avondale Guineas (2100m) on February 18th, the Iffraaj gelding mustered a superior turn of foot in the final straight at Ellerslie on March 4th to win the Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) by a length.

Gingernuts will undoubtedly require some luck early from a wide draw, but the gelding should prove extremely tough to beat in the Australian Derby.

Fellow Kiwi raider Jon Snow debuted in Australia for a smart win in the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) over the weekend and will relish a step up to a mile and a half when he takes his place in the Australian Derby field.

Jon Snow has been a strong and consistent performer this season and has finished third in each of the Group 2 Great Northern Guineas (1600m), Group 1 Levin Classic (1600m), Listed Karaka Mile (1600m) and the New Zealand Derby before taking his place in the Tulloch Stakes.

Prized Icon has been somewhat inconsistent this time, but the multiple Group 1 winner will return to his pet conditions when he takes his place in the Australian Derby field.

Breaking through for a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at the conclusion of last autumn, Prized Icon took a few runs to find peak condition in spring, but ran well for third in each of the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) and Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) in October.

Running a credible fifth in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase (2040m) on Cox Plate Day, the More Than Ready colt responded with a career-best performance to win the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) by close to four lengths.

Having resumed for sixth in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) this time, Prized Icon ran a close second in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m), but failed to fire when tenth in the Rosehill Guineas.

Trainer James Cummings was thrilled with the way that the colt worked to the line for second in the Tulloch Stakes last weekend and is confident that the horse will relish a return to a mile and a half in the Australian Derby.

Anaheim has drawn into the 2017 Australian Derby field on the rails, while Shine Tak Star has been charged with overcoming the outside barrier 13.
