Having landed the trainer in hot water earlier this month when returning a positive cobalt sample following his win in the Listed UCI Stakes (1800m) in spring, Mark Kavanagh is pleased with the condition of Magicool ahead of an autumn campaign geared towards the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m).
Claiming two wins and finishing in the places once over his six start career so far, Magicool has not been seen at the races since running on late to finish a credible fifth in the featured Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington on November 1st.
Completing a strong Cranbourne barrier trial on Thursday morning, Kavanagh told Racing Victoria he has been particularly impressed by the form and class displayed by Magicool in recent weeks and is confident of a successful campaign through the 2015 autumn, and perhaps winter.
“I was surprised by the amount of pace he showed and he finished off strongly too,” Kavanagh said.
“He looks to have improved since the spring and he’s nominated for the Australian Guineas but there’s certainly Sydney and even Brisbane as an option.”
A half-brother to Group 1 winner Super Cool, Magicool stamped his claims as one to watch from his maiden hit-out during autumn last year and is already close to repaying connections for his $250,000 price tag.
Jumping from the gates well in his racing debut; the Aquanas Foods Handicap (1200m) on June 21st, Magicool settled towards the tail of the field of 11, and while kicking well in the final straight, was unable to make up enough distance on runaway winner Gloop, finishing fifth.
Returning in spring for a first-up victory over classy competition in the Height Insurance Agencies Maiden (1200m) on September 11th, the Fastnet Rock gelding ran second in the Ritchie Brothers Auctions 3.y.o (1435m) leading into his UCI Stakes victory; progressing to fifth place finished in the Group 3 Caulfield Classic (2000m) and Victoria Derby.
