2014 Australian Derby Barrier Draw

April 8th, 2014

The barrier draw for the major Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) to be run at Royal Randwick this weekend has been completed, offering several leading chances good opportunity to claim a major title on day 1 of The Championships.

Favourite in early betting markets for Australian Derby success after claiming the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) last start, Criterion will leave from the inside barrier in this weekend’s feature race.

Returning to the track in scintillating form this preparation, Criterion produced a strong turn of foot to finish fourth amongst classy company in the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) first-up, and was unlucky to finish second to Shamus Award in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) second-up on March 1st.

Likely to line up on a soft track at Royal Randwick this weekend, ideal barrier draws on a wet surface have historically been those in the centre of the field; those being anything from barrier 8 through barrier 12.

Rosehill Guineas runner-up Thunder Fantasy was arguably the biggest winner at Tuesday evening’s Australian Derby barrier draw, allocated the ideal barrier 8.

Thunder Fantasy has returned to the track in arguably career best form this time in, claiming the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) with ease first up before running third in the Australian Guineas.

Having displayed a particularly strong turn of foot after breaking from a central barrier in the Rosehill Guineas last time out, trainer Anthony Cummings will be confident of his chances over the longer distance this weekend.

New Zealand-based raider Puccini was disappointing when unable to justify favouritism and 12th in the Rosehill Guineas first-up, but is offered good opportunity to return to the winner’s circle in the Australian Derby after drawing barrier 11.

Claiming three back-to-back wins at Group level prior to crossing the ditch, trainer Peter McKay has confirmed Puccini will line up in perfect order this weekend, and is optimistic of his chances of sealing the New Zealand Derby/Australian Derby double.

Bursting into Australian Derby contention after claiming a huge victory in the Group 2 Nathan Berry Tulloch Stakes (2000m) last weekend, rising star Gallatin will be up against the odds from the get-go this weekend, having been allocated the wide and awkward barrier 17.

Less-than a household name prior to his efforts in the Tulloch Stakes, Gallatin has secured two wins and three places from only eight race starts and faces undoubtedly his biggest test to date in the Australian Derby.
